In January 1998, DeAlmas Latinas was founded by
Gloria M. Rodriguez as an outgrowth of her
graduate research study that evaluated the impact
of psycho-spiritual group work with U.S. born,
young Latina professionals. Spanish for "of
the soul", our name was created by the
initial group of five women as a way to identify
the essence of our work together. Once this
project was completed, we all realized the
necessity to continue to build and offer this
organizational forum to Latinas and other women of
color. As the DeAlmas constituent base started to
expand, comprised of women of color from all walks
of life, it became clear that our name had to
reflect our unique diversity. While maintaining
the integrity of the DeAlmas history, we became
DeAlmas...A Women's Collective.
The first workshop we offered in January 1998 was
titled Visiones and was attended by 8 women.
Visiones has been offered at the beginning of
every year since and in January 2003,the number of
participants grew to 50 women, lending credence to
the power and significant impact of this signature
workshop. In addition to Visiones, DeAlmas has
expanded to provide workshops, sister-circles,
retreats, study groups, and a film club to our
community of women. Lectures, speaking engagements
and workshops have been popular with college
sororities since 1998 and individual sessions have
aided women in their transformation, growth &
healing process since our inception.
Below is the DeAlmas Resume representing the last
several years of community offerings.

DeAlmas:
Celebrating 10 Years!
THE
BEGINNING:
DeAlmas Women’s
Collective began as DeAlmas Latinas in 1996. Five (5) U.S. born Latinas formed
the core group. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we acknowledge
with love and respect the women who gave birth to DeAlmas. A special tribute to
the women of the advisory board, who throughout the years have volunteered their
time, skills, energy, and love in support of the mission and vision of DeAlmas.
